CATOCTIN CREEK DISTILLERY
As winter approached, the Brotherhood planned a cozy, holiday gathering for our December event. Some of the earliest whiskey distilleries in America were located in Virginia, including one owned by George Washington at his Mount Vernon estate. Scott Harris, Founder of Catoctin Creek Distilling Company in Virginia traveled to Kentucky just to meet with us and share their award-winning whiskeys.
The name “Catoctin”, pronounced Ka-TOCK-tin, derives from the Indian tribal name “Kittocton” which meant “place of many deer”. Catoctin describes a range of mountains and the creek which flows picturesquely past the distillery and into the Potomac River and Chesapeake Watershed.
Their flagship product, Roundstone Rye, has been awarded gold medals across the globe (London, New York, San Francisco), and is a fantastic rye whiskey replicating old-world production methods.The grains come from local and organic sources, free of pesticides and chemical additives that would come through in the spirits they produce. The results are the finest, cleanest spirits possible, with the greatest attention to detail in every single bottle. Their passion for the environment extends to the roof of the distillery which is covered in solar panels and generates 85% of their electrical needs.
Scott will spoke with our group and provided a tasting including three of their products: Roundstone Rye 80 proof, Roundstone Rye 92 proof and Roundstone Rye Cask Proof. Scott also mixed up a delicious holiday harvest rye punch to celebrate the season. CLICK HERE for the recipe!
Our tasting was held at the Inn at Spring Run Farm in Prospect. The inn, originally two log cabins from the late 1700’s, is located on a working horse farm. It has been newly restored and is welcoming guests for special events and overnight stays. Appetizers were prepared and served by the inn’s proprietor and chef, Jeff Perellis.
